The Mithraeum of the Circus Maximus

Wednesday 13 December, 2017

14.00 till 15.00 for the underground tour

An additional talk and a coffee can follow for those who have time to stay on

Conducted by Inge Weustink in collaboration with St Stephen’s School’s Lyceum

Many of you will have visited San Clemente and seen the mithraeum under the basilica. Another subterranean space in Rome that was dedicated to the mystery cult of the god Mithras can be found between Santa Maria in Cosmedin and the Circus Maximus. We will have the privilege to visit this site that is open on appointment only. The tour will provide an overview of the origins of the Mithras cult, how it spread across the Roman empire, who the followers of Mithras were and what we know about their secret rites. The Mithraeum of the Circus Maximus is one of the best preserved mithraeums in Rome and you will learn about the layout of the building and the artifacts that are still in situ. This site cannot be visited on a Saturday. That is why, exceptionally, we offer this tour on a Wednesday afternoon. This is an occasion you don’t want to miss: join us for this visit of one of the most fascinating underground archaeological sites of Rome.

Meeting place: Piazza Bocca della Verità, next to the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, 1:45 p.m.

Cost: 15 euro (admission included)

Proceeds benefit PA/student charitable initiatives

Max. 22 participants
