From the St. Stephen's Refugee Committee

Activities which include talks, presentations, photographic exhibits, meetings, charitable work and even football matches are the focus of the work of the SSS Refugee Committee in order to raise awareness of the ongoing plight of refugees. While not a new theme for St Stephen’s, this year faculty decided that an organized and coordinated school-wide effort needed to be made to explore some of the issues around the reasons of what Amnesty International is referring to as the “worst crisis of our time.”

Last week, students heard a first-hand account of the crisis from Jonathan Dumont, a former parent and Head of Television at WFP, who also shared his photographs in an exhibit at the SSS Cultural Center. Students and the Refugee committee have organized a GoFundMe campaign to bring much needed medical care to an orphan Mr Dumont met int he Congo. You can read more about their efforts to raise money in the Head’s Newsletter.

And this past Wednesday evening, a football match was organized with a team of Eritreans, who fled their home country under great duress and difficult circumstances to create new lives in their host country of Italy. They met St Stephen’s' team of footballers, scored some goals and had a chance to exchange stories.

Throughout the year, we will be bringing you more stories about the work of the SSS Refugees Committee and hope to also share student impressions about the ongoing crisis.

You can also read more on this topic in the upcoming issue of The Cortile magazine due out in January 2018.

SSS Boys' Basketball Wins Against St Georges!

The St. Stephen's boys basketball teams won both games against St. George's on Tuesday night. With a professional ref and a new electronic scoreboard on hand, the atmosphere was intense and the games highly competitive.

SSS 'A' Team showed great resolve and hung on to beat St. George's 'A' 39-37 in a hotly contested finish.

SSS 'B' Team got off to a quick start and played together to beat St George's 'B' 28-19.

Both teams continue to impress and improve, and winning their first home games of the year is only going to build excitement for the winter games planned over the next few weeks. A special thank you to Alessandro Di Cicco (father of Luca Di Cicco) for his generous support and bringing pizza for all the teams!
