We are the only English language high school in the historic center of Rome. Our unique and unrivaled location enables us to use the Eternal City as our classroom every week. With Rome’s cultural wonders everywhere, students engage with their surroundings through field trips, visits to archeological ruins, the catacombs, the omnipresent fountains, and the richly varied museums.
Located five minutes from the Roman Forum and Circus Maximus, we are uniquely a residential boarding school as well – the only school of its kind in Italy. Our thriving and close-knit community transforms receptive young adults and exposes them to a world class education.
We bring all the best elements of international education traditions to our students. With the oldest International Baccalaureate program in Italy, our graduates have consistently ranked in the top percentile of IB exams since 1975. Three of the 108 perfect scores worldwide were achieved by our students last year, in addition to the highest IB scores in the history of the school. While most students elect to enroll in the IB program, select Advanced Placement courses are also offered.
A Faculty of Talented Professionals
From authors and playwrights to musicians and published scientists, our diverse faculty includes distinguished scholars in many fields; 83% have an advanced degree, and 20% have earned a PhD. A professional development program allows teachers to keep up with educational trends throughout the year, which they then transmit to the classroom. With a prepared and engaged faculty, students are challenged intellectually and motivated to achieve their personal best.
A Small Community
We are small and this allows us to get to know and work one-on-one with each student. Together with 235 day students and 40 boarders, who make up our robust boarding program, we focus on building close relationships between faculty and students and creating a sense of community. Through common pursuit of knowledge, through shared travel and through experiencing new cultures together, students who live and learn at St. Stephen’s carry this rare moment forward into the rest of their lives.
A Residential Boarding Program Nestled Within a Day School
Fully integrated with our day school, forty boarders make up our vibrant boarding program and are housed within the school’s campus in a renovated villa and ex-convent located on the site of a former Roman temple. Our boarding program offers a balance between a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and extra-curricular activities, a structure that eases the transition from home to boarding life, and a student-boarding faculty ratio of 4:1 that supports students as they develop both academically and personally.
Inclusion through Diversity in Our Student Body
Students from all over the world learn and study together. With thirty-nine nations represented amongst our students and nine languages offered at the school, the distinctiveness of our student body promotes inclusiveness, enriches the educational experience and supports a sense of global citizenship. We welcome students who can bring their own individuality to our smart, gifted, edgy and artsy student body.
