In this first piece, I will address an unfamiliar yet important keyword: zoonosis.
When I was a young graduate student at Lund University in Sweden, studying for my MSc in Environmental Sciences, I came across David Quammen’s Spillover: Animal Infections and the Next Human Pandemic1. I recall sharing the author’s warnings and insights during my work addressing deforestation in Madagascar with the WWF and in my everyday life as an animal rights and environmental activist. I would have never expected, however, for those predictions to come true on a global scale within ten years of the book’s release.
“Make no mistake; they are connected, these disease outbreaks coming one after another. And they are not simply happening to us; they represent the unintended results of things we are doing. They reflect the convergence of two forms of crisis on our planet. The first crisis is ecological; the second is medical.” David Quammen - Spillover
