He left in 1971 to found and, for ten years direct, the Forum School in Rome together with former St. Stephen’s headmaster, Phil Allen. Before returning to St. Stephen's in 1996 to teach economics and English, he directed the Gaumont Film School, taught at the Rhode Island School of Design's Rome program, and served as director of the Lacoste School of the Arts in France. An author, his book The Vines of San Lorenzo has been translated into Italian (Slow Food Editore) and several other languages. Born and bred in Montgomery, Alabama, Edward Steinberg studied at Harvard University, where he was a tutor in History and Literature (Italian and French) and a teaching fellow in social sciences until 1966, with a break to teach history at Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama.
