Writing the Senses: A workshop in Poetry and Prose Starts January 31

Join St. Stephen’s Creative Writing teacher and award-winning poet, Moira Egan for a four-week course, "Writing the Senses." We will read examples of evocative work from contemporary and classic masters; we will have in-class writing experiences with the senses that are less commonly used in writing: smell, taste, touch, sound. We will discuss your newly generated poems and prose in a workshop setting. You will come out of the class with a small portfolio of imagistic, descriptive work and some fresh ideas to keep you writing. Get back in touch with your “inner” poet or prose writer!

The class will take place from 18:00-20:00 on four Thursdays: 31 January, 7 February, 14 February and 21 February.

Moira Egan is an American poet who lives in Rome. Her most recent collections are Olfactorium (Italic Pequod, 2018) and Synæsthesium (winner of The New Criterion Poetry Prize, 2017). Her poems, prose, and translations have been published in journals and anthologies on four continents. She has been teaching for more than two decades and has been delighted, over the years, to see her students publishing poems, articles, stories, and books.

The Boys Basketball Teams Had a Great Week!

On Monday, the boys U16 team hosted St. George's on our home courts. After starting slow and trailing by as much as 20-6, things turned around in the second half. A methodical, determined and outstanding effort saw the boys dominate in the second half, and they came away with a convincing 29-22 win! Peter Mayer, Thomas Griffin, and Marcelino Pichon Marquette sparked the second half offense in one of the best comebacks in St. Stephen's basketball history.

On Thursday, the boys U18 team traveled to St. George's for a rematch of their first game in October. That first game had been a narrow, 2-point victory for SSS, but this time around, the boys showed up strong and controlled the game from the opening tip. A 9-0 1st quarter ended up in a total team victory, 31-13. Led by Michael Simunec's 13 points and 13 rebounds, all players contributed to the win and it never got close!

Great job to the boys basketball teams; they now look ahead to games at AOSR on Friday, December 14.
