The new issue of INK, written and designed by students, offers a thoughtful collection of works that capture the essence of our community’s creative spirit. Each piece invites you to pause and reflect, exploring the depth of human experience through words and images. From introspective poetry to evocative art, these contributions showcase the diverse perspectives that make INK a truly meaningful publication. Student writer and Ink magazine editor Silvia Solima ‘25 shares one of her pieces–a descriptive poem–that dwells upon the combination of cold winter air and the smell of oranges to paint a picture of the silence of solitary and waiting.
"In order to understand the world, one has to turn away from it on occasion"
- Albert Camus
A cold winter air
Blankets the grey streets.
He shuffles along in silence,
Rubber soles scraping the cement,
The rolled-up newspaper
Swinging at his sides.
Observing the dull outline of the city,
He imagines himself as the dutiful architect
Of his own solitary mind.
The newspaper falls open,
The margins are covered with sketches.
He finds a bench
Under an old orange tree.
The dull green paint
Peels off in flakes.
The smell of oranges
Lingers in the air.
He sits, his worn hands
Folding the fabric
Of his dark overcoat.
He waits.
