A Transformative Theatre Experience in Siracusa: St. Stephen’s Students Shine on the Global Stage

In December, our IB Theatre students embarked on an extraordinary journey to Siracusa, where they participated in the ISTA High School Theatre Festival. This prestigious event brought together talented students from schools around the world, including ACS Cobham International School, the American Community School Amman, the American School of The Hague, the International School of Dusseldorf, Park International School, Verdala International School in Portugal, and, of course, St. Stephen’s School.

The festival offered a unique platform for students to collaborate, create, and connect, using the power of theatre to explore storytelling as a tool for understanding the world and driving change.

Day One: Inspired by History and Myth

The transformative experience began with a visit to the Neapolis Archeological Park and the iconic Greek Theatre of Siracusa. Surrounded by the rich history and breathtaking beauty of this ancient site, students found inspiration for their workshops, which centered on the Myth of Arethusa—a tale deeply rooted in the local heritage.

This initial immersion into the historical and cultural significance of Siracusa set the tone for the festival, sparking creativity and curiosity among the students.

Three Days of Creativity and Collaboration

Over the next three days, the students engaged in intensive workshops led by four exceptional theatre practitioners. Guided by the ensemble method of learning, they worked collaboratively from morning to evening, exploring innovative approaches to performance and storytelling.

The workshops challenged students to step outside their comfort zones, think creatively, and embrace the collaborative spirit of the festival. They learned to use their voices and bodies as instruments of expression, crafting performances that resonated on both an emotional and intellectual level.

The Culmination: A Heartwarming Showcase

The festival concluded with a powerful and heartfelt showcase, where students presented the fruits of their collective efforts. The performances were a testament to their dedication, creativity, and newfound understanding of theatre as a medium for connection and change.
The showcase was more than just a performance—it was a celebration of the students’ growth, their shared experiences, and the lifelong friendships forged over the weekend.

Beyond the Stage: A Transformative Journey

While the festival was undoubtedly a highlight, the students’ time in Siracusa was filled with moments of joy, reflection, and bonding. They not only honed their theatrical skills but also deepened their appreciation for cultural exchange and the power of storytelling to unite people from diverse backgrounds.

The experience epitomized the values of St. Stephen’s School: creativity, collaboration, and global citizenship. It was a reminder of the transformative potential of theatre to inspire change and build connections that transcend borders.

A Glimpse at Art History in Paris

While the focus of the weekend was on the magic of Siracusa, it is worth mentioning that our IB Art History students also embarked on an inspiring journey earlier this month. They visited Paris, where they attended a Surrealist retrospective at the Pompidou Center and explored the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée de l’Orangerie.

These enriching opportunities reflect St. Stephen’s commitment to experiential learning and fostering a lifelong love for the arts.
