Welcome back to the Dean’s Reading Corner, where we reflect on thought-provoking books that inspire our community to grow and learn together.
This summer, St. Stephen’s faculty and staff immersed themselves in The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, a compelling exploration of the mental health challenges faced by today’s youth. Haidt delves into the societal shifts and pervasive influence of social media that have contributed to an alarming rise in anxiety and depression among young people.
Haidt argues that the digital world often creates environments that amplify stress and isolation, making it harder for youth to develop the resilience necessary to thrive. He calls for a cultural shift—one that prioritizes real-world connections and places mental well-being at the forefront of our efforts in an increasingly connected yet isolating society.
For many of us, the book’s insights were strikingly relevant to our experiences as educators and mentors. It challenged us to think critically about how we can better support our students in navigating today’s complex world while fostering their emotional resilience.
We look forward to continuing these important conversations within our school community as we strive to create an environment where every student feels supported and empowered. Stay tuned for more reflections in the next edition of the Dean’s Reading Corner!
