St. Stephen’s School in Rome presents an extraordinary opportunity for alumni, parents, and friends to embark on a fascinating journey through time with its Jubilee Year Summer Program. This eight-day immersive experience, set against the backdrop of the Roman Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee, will explore the cultural, religious, and historical significance of jubilees and celebrations across civilizations.
Program Overview
Dates: June 20 - June 28, 2025
Location: Rome, Italy
Participants: Limited to 16 alumni, parents, and friends of St. Stephen’s School
Program Leader: Inge Weustink, Classicist and Director of the Dr. Helen Pope Lyceum
Each day of the program will offer a deep dive into different historical and cultural themes related to jubilees and celebrations:
Day 1: Arrivals and a Welcome Dinner featuring a summer truffle extravaganza paired with Umbrian wines.
Day 2: Exploring the roots of the Catholic Jubilee with Professor Cristiana Filippini.
Day 3: A look into Ancient Roman Religions, including visits to Mithraeums in Circus Maximus and Ostia Antica.
Day 4: A journey through Jewish Rome, tracing the origins of jubilees in the Book of Leviticus.
Day 5: A deep dive into the legacy of the Augustan Empire with Professor Ulrich.
Day 6: A scenic excursion to Castelli Romani, rich in historical battles and archaeological wonders.
Day 7: An exploration of medieval Anagni, once a papal residence.
Day 8: Understanding Sino-Roman relations at the Hua Yi Si Buddhist Temple, followed by a Chinese feast.
Day 9: Departures, with lasting memories of the Eternal City.
This program brings together renowned scholars and experts who will guide participants through engaging lectures, site visits, and culinary experiences. Some of the distinguished guests include:
Professor Daniele Garrone – Old Testament Scholar and expert on the biblical origins of the Jubilee.
Professor Roger B. Ulrich – Renowned archaeologist specializing in Roman architecture and history.
Professor Gabriele Tola – Sinologist and expert in Sino-Roman relations.
Maureen B. Fant – Food historian and author, offering insights into Jewish-Roman culinary traditions.
Thiam Seong Yong – Restaurateur and specialist in Chinese-Roman cultural connections.

A €500 non-refundable deposit is required to secure a spot, with the balance due by April 30, 2025. Spaces are limited and assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
