Rome's Streetwear Renaissance
Inside the World of TAO and Its Visionary Founder, Thaddeus von Vacano ‘26 API ID : magazine

We recently caught up with Thaddeus von Vacano, the creative force behind TAO streetwear, to delve into the brand's origins, mission, and the journey of its founder, a St. Stephen's rising senior on a mission to revolutionize fashion in Rome.

Interviewer: Thaddeus von Vacano, you started your streetwear brand in grade 11–a fantastic accomplishment! Can you tell us about TAO?

Thaddeus: TAO is a streetwear brand born in Rome. It represents the harmony of yin and yang, intertwining with various hip-hop cultures, especially focusing on the Roman scene. Interestingly, TAO is actually my childhood nickname, given by my parents after my father had it tattooed on his shoulder. It symbolizes the Roman lifestyle and its waves, embodying the essence of Roma Kaput Mundi.

Interviewer: What’s the vision and mission of the brand?

Thaddeus: The vision of TAO is to conquer lands, cultures, and philosophies, much like Trajan and Julius Caesar, but through fashion rather than warfare. Our mission is to capture the spirit of the current era, exploring diverse cultures and philosophies, and transforming clothing into timeless pieces akin to graffiti and street art.

Interviewer: Why did you start TAO?

Thaddeus: I started TAO to showcase that timeless fashion is achievable in Rome, to inspire youth through fashion design and hip-hop music, and to revolutionize both attire and behavior. TAO seeks to be both a cult and a culture. My motivation stemmed from a desire to see something different from the ubiquitous big brands on every T-shirt. Inspired by the story of David and Goliath, I began drawing and designing clothes, gradually transitioning to painting on T-shirts and incorporating bleach. Starting with customizing T-shirts and sweatshirts, I aimed to infuse art and fashion into daily life.

Interviewer: How much time did it take?

Thaddeus: It required time and patience to establish the brand. Initially hesitant, I was encouraged by my best friend Edo, also known as Dj Doodie, to create TAO. The process involved numerous redesigns, adjustments, and recreations as I strived to achieve perfection in the first product. It took seven months to design and print the first T-shirt.

Interviewer: What inspired you?

Thaddeus: I drew inspiration from Chicano art, influenced by figures like Mr. Cartoon and the New York fashion and hip-hop scene. I was particularly inspired by Shirt Kings, who transitioned their graffiti from trains to fabric, and Dapper Dan, renowned for bold risk-taking. Moreover, I am continually inspired by diverse cultures, historical periods, and styles. Brands like Supreme and FUBU, which sell experiences rather than mere clothing, also inspired me. I hope that TAO embodies the spirit of the St. Stephen’s Community, which played a significant role in reshaping my worldview.

Interviewer: What are you currently working on? Where will we see you next?

Thaddeus: I am currently exploring various customizations and experimenting with different mediums and styles. Also, I am working on the new summer collection coming out very soon…Make sure you check it out on:
